The Nightingale/Fox is the result of a wish made by Robert Lepage. These two brief operas will be produced a few years down the road. The Nightingale is an adaptation of a tale by Lepage’s longtime intimate, Hans Christian Anderson, while Fox is a grotesque farce for singers and mime artists. For this production Ex Machina will use puppets, working with American production designer Michael Curry and Quebec director Martin Genest. It will focus on the Asian roots of these two tales: Vietnamese in the case of Anderson’s, and Russian or Chinese for Fox.
The three creators met in Vietnam and went off to explore the old tradition of water puppetry.
Production scheduled for 2009.
